As we walk into Nathaniel’s home, I realize that I wasn’t expecting what I saw . The strangest thing is that there are no pictures of himself and his family throughout the house. He walks a step behind me, measuring my reaction to his house. “What a beautiful home you have here.” I say as I watch him walk around me to lead me to his kitchen.
“Sit. Do you want something to drink?” He says.
“Yes please. Water with lots of ice.” I reply.
He turns to a cupboard and opens it.
He takes a cup and heads to a refigerator. To distract myself, I let my eyes wonder. I notice suddenly a picture lain upside down on the table.
Curiosity makes me reach out for it. As I am about to turn and examine it, its gone. Nataniel has it in his hands and placing it in his back pocket. He hands me the cup of water as he says, “That’s not yours to look at.”
“Come on. Lets go to the living room.” He says abruptly.
After yesterday, everything has changed between Nathaniel and I. Today he took me completely out of surprise and was waiting for me in my front steps.
“Can we walk together today? I hate walking by myself.” he says.
“Yeah of course. I don’t mind.” I reply.
I turn to lock my door, just as he says, “I like it better curly. Naturally curly, I mean.”
“You are the most random person I have ever met, you know.” I say.
He doesn’t say anything for a long time. there is a long outstretched silence.
“Fine. I’ll give. What do you mean by that?” I say finally.
“Your hair. I like the way your hair looks naturally. I don’t like when you mess with it. The color of it and the way its curly is just right. Don’t do anything to it. This look suits you better then the rest.” he says.
Suddenly I have a feeling that he is saying more then just that. I let it slide.
We’re at school by this point anyway. I half expect him to say goodbye and walk away, but he does the complete opposite. He is apparently walking me to class. I feel the stares of Ashley and her clique boring into my back as we pass them.
As we get to my first period of the day, I turn, expecting him, again, to say goodbye and walk away. And again, he doesn’t.
Just to get a conversation going, I say, “I don’t think that Ashley and her crew like that you give me more attention then them.”
“Who’s Ashley?” He says plainly.
“Well never mind then.” I reply.
There is a long pause. Then he finally says to me, “Ditch school with me today, yeah?”
“Err……and go where exactly?” I reply completely confused.
“To my house of course. My parents aren’t home. They aren’t even in town. So what do you say?” he says.
“And what do you suppose we are going to do for six hours?” I say skeptically.
“Whatever you want.” he says.
I think about it for a few minutes.
“okay then.” I finally reply.
“All weekend long I have been thinking about all that has happened with Nathaniel. All the encounters that we have had. I’m so confused journal! The worst part is that I can’t seen to make myself not care.”
Today is Sep. 2 and there’s something different about the atmosphere. I woke up in that type of mood. The mood of dedication. I feel like dedicating myself to something, so I dedicate my time to doing my hair and make-up.
I decide to straighten it today. Suddenly, the doorbell rings. Wonder who it could be? I look at myself in my bathroom mirror, just incase. Everything is straightened. Good.
I run to get the door as I yell, “Commmiiinnnggg!”
NO! I cannot believe it. It’s Nathaniel. With my mail ?
“hey.” I manage to say.
“Oh. Uhh, hey. Oh here’s your mail. Sorry I just wanted an excuse to see you. I know that things last weekend were pretty weird for you. having me blab on about things you don’t understand and me ignoring you and here I am doing it again. Sorry.” He says.
wow what a mouthful. I take the mail and turn to walk to the kitchen to place the mail on the counter. As I do this, I say without turning, “come in.”
I here the door close and his feet shuffling behind me.
“Where are your parents?” He says.
“Working. Where are YOURS?” I say rudely.
“At home.” he says plainly.
I turn to look at him abruptly and he is right behind me. I mean RIGHT behind me. We bump into each other. As usual, I find a way to trip myself, but he somehow catches me. I forget what I was going to say because his lips distract me. We say nothing for a long 30 seconds. I straighten up, never taking my eyes off of his lips.
He finally says, “Are you okay?”
“Uhm, yeah I’m fine. Thank you.” I reply.
We step away abruptly. He looks nervous and is looking around. I just feel butterflies in my stomach.
“Do you want something to drink?” I say, just to end the silence.
“No thanks, I’m leaving anyways.” He replies.
I walk him to the door. He steps out and turns. He Looks at my hair trying not to meet my eyes. He reaches out to grab a single strand of my hair and says, “You missed a spot.” and turns to walk away.
